by Abigail Perry

Synopsis:

Jacob is 4 years old and it’s his first day of preschool. He’s shy around other people, but when he wears his red cape and blue mask, he is the brave and fearless Captain Count the super hero! His first day is full of adventure and surprises too! There’s a teacher with rosy cheeks who reads to him about his favorite things – Planets! Jacob conquers his fear of being different from the other kids, meets a new friend who has “bergers” just like him and his super powers help him create a new way to high five someone - with his feet! It’s an amazing first day for Jacob who learns that you truly never know what you are capable of unless you try.

About the Author:

Abigail Perry was raised in Kingsport, Tennessee. As a stay-at-home mom, she spends her time being passionate about making her home greener and healthier while teaching her children about self-esteem and caring for others. In November of 2012, her son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. This event ignited her search for a book to help her son learn self-acceptance. When her search came up empty it inspired Abigail to fill the gap and write this book based on her own son's experience. She now spends time blogging about Asperger's and building relationships that empower those in the autism community.

Review

Everyone wants to be a superhero. Abbey Perry ingeniously and creatively emboldens kids to find their inner super hero powers. She gently inspires and challenges young readers to view their differences as dynamic STRENGTHS not as inhibiting weaknesses. This talented author highlights individual differences as keys to unlocking one s full potential, purpose, and destiny, which ultimately shapes them into the special person they are. Although written with Asperger children in mind, Abbey Perry provokes readers of every age to redefine what normal looks like. She indirectly begs us to ponder what our super powers are while awakening us to a broader understanding of the people around us. Aspie Hero is enlightening and transcends all genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, syndromes, disorders, appearances, and cultures. This simple, yet profound story encourages children and adults of every age to freely and courageously step out of their comfort zones without shying away from their innate differences, or fear of the unknown. This book has given me unique insight into the life of a child with Asperger, and I now have a greater understanding of what a day in their shoes would be like. I have a new appreciation and tremendous admiration for moms, dads, teachers, and caregivers who daily influence and affirm the many children who live this special journey of life. As someone who works closely with children and a mom to four of my own, I have been incredibly challenged to reevaluate how I teach, influence, encourage, motivate, and perceive others. Aspie Hero presents an easy to relate to character that has allowed me something tangible to further educate those within my home and workplace, as well as challenge my personal worldview. --Leah Winegar
